Hi Dave,

The above BASIC code can be translated into C on Linux with very little
effort.  Lemme know if you want some assistance.

Also, theres a serial port debugger available on SourceForge:

  http://sourceforge.net/projects/ssnooper

that might be very helpful as you try to work out timing or other
communications issues with your code.
