802.1q is an IEEE standard for trunking. Cisco's implementation is
proprietary and called ISL. Cisco switches (and routers) will support both
methods though.

Even though both ISL and 802.1q aim to provide trunking capabilties, they
have different features and limitations. Cisco's site provides some good
details.
