I had X and Enlightenment running great, but with the last apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade X windows will start however is now giving me an error. I understand that this might be cause by trying to run X as root, but this was while trying as user.

Perhaps the permissions were changed so that only root is allowed to run
the Xserver locally? There is a file called /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config

Mine has a line that reads

allowed_users=console

Yours wouldn't happen to say root, would it?

Judging by the log file you reference, this is via startx, not via XDM?
That 'kind-of' looks like some kind of failure with xauth. But I
thought those said something about a refused X-MIT-MAGICCOOKIE or
something like that. Perhaps you could try moving your .Xauthority file
aside and see if it works that way, to rule that out. Does it start up
as root?
