I'm with ya. Actually, I was pretty lucky in that my first kernel
compile went very smoothly... I had to recompile it because I had
forgotten something, I think I forgot to compile the right module for my
Ethernet card or something, but it wasn't disasterous. 

I just wanted to add that note of caution because I've found that there
are a number of people who aren't receptive to learning the hard way.
