So you may have version 1.1.8 installed already. What does this command
tell you?

  $ java -version

If you just installed whatever Java implementation came with
RedHat--and, as I suspect, that's 1.1.8--my suggestion would be to just
get rid of it and install the latest from Sun. Of course, you should
make sure removing the RedHat package doesn't break anything important,
but I'd be very surprised if it did.

This may or may not help with your immediate problem, but it's a good
idea if you plan to ever do any Java development or run any recent Java
applications.
