I run the U of Wash IMAP server, it seems to run without much fuss.

That is the same server that comes with RH9.
I use regular unix 'mbox' format files, seems to have acceptable performance
for me. Clients use MS Outlook, MS Outlook Express, Mozilla Mail, Evolution.
I also use Postfix as my MTA.
Get the O'Reilly book on IMAP, it's a good reference.
