[CLUE-Tech] Monitoring pppd connections and downloading files

Hey all,

When I'm connected to the Internet, I sometimes see Mozilla and other
programs that "watch" how things are downloaded and sort of track when
things will be finished.  Is there a command line that would tell me how
big each file is and how much has been downloaded over time?  For
instance, I had one email that showed this in /var/log/messages:

5809797 body octets

HUGE!!  How can I monitor this coming into my system (i.e. it started
and knows how big it is) and where it is in the downloading (i.e. so
many bytes/octets/???)?
