Load Knoppix.  Copy X configuration off to another box.  Load Debian.  
Copy X configuration into Debian.   ;-)  That seems to be a common 
technique as long as your hardware is not proprietary (Nvidia, etc.).  
It's massively cheating, but it works!  (GRIN)
