ifup only cares about the interface name, you can't pass the essid
there. 

If you add it to the ifcfg-wlan0 file it needs to be: 

ESSID="yourname"

You can also try doing a 'iwconfig wlan0 essid whatever' after you do
the ifup, but then you have to do it every time. ;)
