Personaly I agree. I think on my main personal box I
might move to gentoo or SuSE... :) 

Here is a fun project ... build all from source ...
done it even going into ELF which required rebuilding
pretty much everything including rebuilding ELF gcc
from a dist gcc that targeted a.out by default ...

(That is an example of boot strapping :)
