I've seen this when DMA is on for a drive and the drive or motherboard 
chipset has a borked DMA implementation, especially CD burners.

I think SuSE 9.1 attempts to crank up the DMA early in the boot process, 
if I remember correctly.  It does on my laptop, but I may have tweaked 
with settings in /etc to do it.
