Egads, Matt!

You're right in one sense, which is that yes, you can change the number of
phosphors which are illuminated by the sweep of the electron beam inside
the CRT (or whatever the same effect is on an LCD or other type of non-CRT
monitor) for a "display pixel". You can argue that for the purposes of
looking at what's displayed, that's the usage that matters, and I won't
belabor that at all.

But still, using a larger number of phosphors per pixel than the monitor
is capable of doesn't change the monitor's DPI, only your utilization of
it.

And, you can say the same thing about printers, for that matter, otherwise
we wouldn't be able to specify printing at a particular DPI setting.
