Actually, I've been running 2.6 kernels - up through 2.6.1_rc1 - for
six months on my labrat desktop (AthlonXP 1800+, 512M, VIA chipset,
older nvidia nforce2), and both the nvidia 4496 and 5536 level drivers
work fine for me.  The 5536 drivers are ca. 300 fps faster (glxgears)
and seem to have eliminated some (nagging but not fatal) memory
management kernel error messages that I always got using the nvidia
drivers (even on 2.4 kernels).

Of course, I'm not a gamester, so I can't comment on how well this setup
would work with games.

The only problems I'm aware of are frame buffer support (only use VGA
mode I've heard) and some are reporting negative interaction with ACPI,
kernel preemption support, etc.), but I've not experienced that.
