says "standby" or "suspend to ram" isn't supported in 2.4 kernels. 
Seems like the authoritative source to me.

So is it true that all you Linux laptop toters live without standby and 
hibernate?

Could apm help?  A friend has a new laptop that hangs when I modprobe 
apm.  I'm guessing it does acpi but not apm.

I guess there's swsusp for hibernate-ability anyway.
