I have found this link to be pretty up to date on what is Linux
compatible (or not) with various hardware, include WiFi for laptops.

Another avenue is there is an ndiswrapper (refer to Slashdot for the
specifics) that will take a Windows driver and use it under Linux.
Apparently folks have had good success with 802.11g WiFi cards using
this on various laptops as well I have heard.
