It might help to understand what your goal is, beyond ending up with 
a "firewall/router box".

Is this a production environment or a sandbox?

Are you familiar with all the individual "packages" you will want/need to do 
all things you want it to do?

There are many (dozens?) of mini/security linux distro's that would meet your 
needs.  Or, if you know precisely which packages you want/need you could just 
install them via the expert or individual package selection methods that come 
with most linux distro's.
