[CLUE-Tech] ALSA question (I think)

Ok, so this output would probably have the most bearing on the laptop sound
problem I'm having at the moment...
-----------
lappie:~ # cat /dev/sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.4 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux lappie 2.6.5-7.95-default #1 Thu Jul 1 15:23:45 UTC 2004 i686
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
Intel 82801DB-ICH4 at 0xe02ff800, irq 5

Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
------------

My question is... (and this is a typical disconnect between a programmer and
end-user type thing)... in WHICH config? The kernel config (i.e. the kernel
was built without sound support for this chipset), the ALSA runtime config,
or some other mystery config? :-)

Wouldn't it be nice if the thing actually said "NOT ENABLED IN KERNEL CONFIG"
instead since sound on Linux is a multi-layered thing? ;-)

Off to go do more googling, anyone already "been there done that, got the
T-shirt"?
