With an imap server that supports virtual hosting, there is no user1837 
(in /etc/passwd).  The imap server manages the spool files and accounts 
itself.

Courier-IMAP will do this.  Cyrus will do this (though it seems you need 
the latest, 2.2 I think).  I don't know about Dovecot or UW.
