So you have a serial port at ttyS0 and no others.  If the computer has a 
built in port, that's probably it at S0.  Where's your modem?

- it isn't installed or needs to be reseated?

- you've changed the settings from the above port/irq (in that case 
setserial can set ttyS1 to the correct settings, or you can change the 
modem back); there may be jumpers on the modem to set it, or it may be 
set in software (which could be DOS only)--look at the docs

- it's dead?
