I figured out how to get my frame buffer to work. If I pass vga=ask to the kernel, I need to type 307 (1280x1024 w 256 colors), but if I configure grub to automatically set my video mode, I need to pass vga=0x307. Now to play with different combinations and see exactly which framebuffer settings I need for my 2.6 kernel.
