Well, since Keith already mentioned you might need a newer kernel for USB2
support, this probably won't be helpful.

Back when I was tyring to use a scanner over USB (2.4.18 kernel), I needed
to load the generic SCSI modules, because the way it worked was to emulate
SCSI over USB. Maybe that was only for the V6USL module (Microtek
scanner). So anyway, my scanner was /dev/sg0.

I also recall from the USB mailing lists (and some messages on the kernel
list that I found, too) that USB success in the 2.4 kernels seems
intermittent. For some folks, it was no problem, others, varying degrees
of success, and for me, a kernel panic on an IRQ conflict.

Is /dev/usb/scanner0 an actual device, or a symbolic link? (Just curious)

I found the USB and Sane mailing lists to be very helpful.
