In my limited experience with projectors (Epson only), I have not found them to be OS dependant. 
Rather, the manual simply specifies tolerances for resolution, refresh rate (horiz and vert), and
color depth.  In theory, you should be able to hook any video source to the feed as long as the
output is within those tolerances.

Do you have access to the original documentation for this specific projector?  Can you ensure the
video settings of your laptop meet those tolerances?  I'm sure you already know that some video
drivers are less than reliable at reporting what they are actually producing.

Outside of working with the documentation and a trustworthy video card and driver, I fear it's a
shot in the dark.
