if it's a Sun CD drive, you can boot from it, just type "boot cdrom"
from the ok prompt.  If it's not a Sun drive, let me know, I have one. 
If you need any assistance with the hardware, let me know, I have a
fair bit of experience with it.  Never installed linux on one though, I
figured why bother, since Solaris works perfectly fine.
