So I'm a little confused by the behavior of my IBM Thinkpad A20m.  My X 
resolution is set to 1024x768.  If I boot up without plugging in an external 
monitor, X starts in 1024x768.  If I boot up with an external montor, X 
starts in 800x600.

How can I make sure that X will always boot in 1024x768?
