I would second the morphix suggestion - knoppix, is great, but really
overkill for a special purpose distro.  There is just so much on there
that most people don't need or use.

That said, here are some other places to look at what other folks have
done with live CD's

 - of note in this list is jollix, a nice minimal (small) image 
   just for mulimedia (and, they claim, gaming).

	Jollix is actually gentoo-based...
 
	This approach may be better than a knoppix-based one in that knoppix
	has so many of it's programs compressed on the disk (to fit 'em all)
	that using knoppix apps on modest hardware is very slow.  By making
	your disk smaller, you can leave everyting uncompressed and make
	users happier.
