Well, I doubt anyone else will have this problem, but here's the intial
answer.

You see, I actually have (were I to plug in everything available) a need
for 4 serial ports. I've been running the serial modem using a Belkin USB
serial port. It finally occurred to me to try the obvious thing, and plug
the modem into good old ttyS0. Works like a champ.

Fortunately, getting my UPS line back in service will be just a matter of
getting a gender changer for the 2nd serial port. And, the other two
things I can live without -- in fact have been for a while anyway.

Thanks all, for your input.

Now, all I have to do is build a few things from source, and make RPMs out
of them. But that's a different thread.
