[CLUE-Tech] upgrading rpm

I've been using my two Mandrake boxes as a firewall
and workstation, respectively. The firewall is having
hardware problems so I'm rebuilding the workstation
into a replacement.

Now I've figured out how to apply patches to installed
rpms on the command line, urpmi and its ilk. I have
all the updates in the /var/cache/urpmi/rpm directory,
it took some doing, but they're there (nfs files won't
download so I did it by hand). I've run urpmi
--auto-select and am getting a failed dependancy;
perl-URPM >= 0.94.

Ok, no biggie, go get the package and install. Failed,
needs updated rpm 4.2.2 and a few other files.
Download them and attempt an upgrade of rpm. Failed,
needs other files.

Now I'm in the area where there's a problem. I have
the current rpms but they won't upgrade even with
--force. The rpm.org website says that --force will
work with everything unless there's a dependancy.
There's no reference in the --upgrade pages on what to
do in this case.

So, the big question is, how do I upgrade the rpm
package and support files?

I've been poking around for the past day or so and
will continue to do so but I thought I'd check here as
part of my poking.

Thanks.

Carl
