I concur. If you skrued up the swap partition, fix that before doing
further troubleshooting. On older systems with less then the recommended 
RAM, proper swap previsioning matters. 

I have, in the past, used 2 or more swaps (one swap partition and the others 
being swap files) so that I could enable them as needed but not burn up disk 
space. This results in awful performance. It is, however, educational. If you 
have never done it before, you should try it so you know first hand what it's
like.
