Thanks for the offer, Vern, but I have achieved some huge steps forward. I
made up another boot floppy as Jeff Cann had suggested, and then Mandrake
8.2 proceeded to install. I had a few glitches getting the packages
installed, but with perseverence was sucessful. The graphics error I had
mentioned in the origional post was a problem with color depth. It seems
the Mach64 can't handle higher bit values in color depth (32 bit or 24 bit).
I had to use the lowest selection, then I got a normal graphics screen.
Apparently, when Windows told me it had set up 19 million colors on this
machine, it was speaking with a forked tongue! No big surpise! The only
part I don't get, is why Mandrake 10.0 would not access the SCSI CDROM. It
appeared that both 8.2 and 10.0 were using the same SCSI driver. Oh Well,
don't question a sucessfull outcome.

So I now have a working Mandrake 8.2 system and have gotten the internet
access working. Now, my Linux adventure can get going in ernest. Thanks
for all the responses and help. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions
later on as I proceed up the Linux learning curve.
