Most likely you could just delete all the . files and dirs and the 
effect would be the same.  Here's what I would do:

Log in as root in tty1.  Copy your (regular user) home directory 
somewhere (cp -ax works well for this).

Delete . files and dirs in your live, regular user home dir and try 
logging in after each one.  Start deleting things related to gdm, your 
desktop (Gnome), and X first.

Once you get in, restore all but the last thing that you've deleted from 
your copy.

Probably a config file is getting corrupted and preventing your login. 
Probably deleting it results in gdm/the desktop recreating a default 
setup.  Probably you could diff the problem file/dir (from your copy) 
with the new one created when you log in successfully and track down the 
specific problem.  Then you could more easily fix it, or even submit a 
bug report if no one else has.
