[CLUE-Tech] Athlon 64 with SATA on gentoo

I tried to install gentoo on my Athlon 64 last night.  No luck but I
learned a few new things.

Gentoo's default kernel only recognizes 2 IDE drives.  To see more, you
need to type "modprobe ide-disk".  That works.  Sort of.  I can see the
drive now, but anything that accesses the drive, including a simple "ls"
command, takes minutes to return.

I don't have this problem with Suse or LFS, but they might not be using a
module.
