Does the above post have anything to do with your situation?  What
happens if you simply 

 #mount -t {ext2,ext3,vfat,...} /dev/fd0 /media/floppy

for which ever type of filesystem it has?  The line in the above post
concerning the 'cost of using beta software' raises my eyebrows.
