I didn't follow the thread much, but I would recommend m0n0wall

It is a boot from CD firewall distro that saves your config to
something like a floppy or a usb drive or compact flash.  I have used
it before and I know next to nothing about firewalls and/or
networking.  I was able to setup rules and get things done after just
a couple of hours.
