As another option, I have been using NetworkManager of late.
http://www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager/
It works nicely. It uses gnome-keyring to keep wep keys and passwords,
prefers to associate with networks you have associated with before,
has a nice graphical signal display in the systray.
It's a gnome app, but it works fine under Xfce at least.
