My advice is to not rely on IP addresses at all, and go strictly by DNS.
Come up with a naming convention for your devices that makes sense, and
then put in DNS entries for them.

You should also make sure your device DNS is locally scoped, you don't
want everyone on the internet able to do reverse lookups on your addresses
and map your network. :) Split DNS is golden.

I completely agree that using loopbacks is the way to go.
