After I did this, I don't have /dev/input/mice anymore, and X won't 
start.  Also, I think that at the very LEAST something for udev needs to 
be in /etc/init.d/

Hmmm, not sure where to start.  I just used apt to reinstall from 
ftp.debian.org testing.
