Gel cells sound like what the UPS batteries are anyway.  I got a 2000VA 
APC (from CLUE, no less) and put new batteries in it.  I estimate the 
battery life at 8 hours unless I turn on my monitor and workstation. 
And I only get one load LED even then.  But that's complete overkill for 
most users.
