A good way to troubleshoot these kinds of problems is to use a sniffer. 
  Can ping but can't http--what is the network doing that is different?

Windows works, Linux doesn't.  Again, what's the difference in the packets?

Although not guaranteed to find the problem, networked apps tend to fail 
on network behavior and ruling that out is a useful thing.  In your case 
it would have made the AAAA lookups visible (and even if not the issue 
you might have said "quit that!")
