You should be able to set the starting screen position using the GConf
Editor.  If I remember correctly, there is a top menu item called
Preferences (?) that will take you to the editor.

You should be able to see the text color from inside gnome-terminal.  I
don't know the code for amber, but you should be able to find something
close.
