Erik,
On my Windows XP box (boo, hiss...), I had to open both the T'bird
extensions window and a Firefox window, looking at T'bird extensions.
Then I had to "drag and drop" the de-de dictionary .xpi file from the
Firefox window to the T'bird window. Then I restarted T'bird and there
was the German dictionary. I don't know about Ubuntu, but I will try
the same procedure there.
I think Linux the dictionary requires T'bird 2.0+. Kubuntu has only
1.5.0, though.
