Kevin,

changed the baseurl in CentOS-Base.repo to
baseurl=http://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5.0/updates/i386/
... same site I downloaded the DVD .iso file.

even excluding the problem "vim-minimal" didn't help ...

I took the DVD+R which I created from the downloaded .iso file & tried a physical install on
an old workstation (1GB RAM & P4 1.7 GHz). During the first part of the install, there is an
option to do a media check. I did ... and after scanning the media, I got a result ...
failure. This inspite of the .iso file passing the md5sum check. So, I'm downloading a new
DVD .iso file from http://mirror.chpc.utah.edu/pub/centos/5.0/isos/i386/

This whole fiasco could have been caused by a corruption. There should be a way of telling
kernel.org that their DVD .iso is bad.

Anyway, I'll try again once the new image file is downloaded. Thanks!

Mark
