[clue-tech] Switching to Qwest DSL soon, any suggestions?

Having switched to Qwest/MSN DSL a while back to save money, I strongly
recomend against it.

While this service may be fine for casual web browsing, it sucks for
anything requiring a more constant connection (VPN, ssh, Xbox Live, Skype).
It seems that Qwest/MSN frequently rotates your IP (short DHCP lease?) and
forces it to change. This results in rather frequent disconnects for many
services.

I've talked to some friends at Qwest who confirm that this is indeed the
case. The IP switching is deliberate.

As a result, I'm considering switching to the more expensive
qwest.netservice, where you can apparently pay more money for a static
IP and fewer
restrictions. Any other ISP than MSN would probably be an improvement.

In terms of compatibility with Linux, I did use a Windows box to do the
initial modem setup with their MSN cd, but I normally run Ubuntu on most of
my systems at home with no issues. The account/password is stored on the
DSL modem, so it isn't generally a problem.
