It turns out that my Thinkpad is actually an r51, but that aside I am
writing this now through wireless.
1. Installed Kubuntu Feisty Herd5
2. Lots of screwing around and RTFM with no success.
3. Verified that wireless was working from windows.
4. More searching and RTFM
5. Finally light bulb goes on. The laptop uses an Atheros chip, and
the madwifi drivers support this, but debian/ubuntu package this as a
restricted driver. Install the restricted kernel modules, reboot, and
success.
6. Send this mail, then unplug internet cable from the Linksys unit,
since it's totally wide open at present.
Thanksw for all who contributed.
