My experience is that I've notice a huge difference based on building
materials.  With a new (aka: cheap, big builder construction) home I've
been able to cover 3 levels and 3500+ sq ft using 1 AP without any
issues..  On an older home with foil backed wall insulation I've had to
use 3 APs running WDS to cover even less sq ft..

If you run a custom firmware you can often turn up your signal output,
but the better solution is to get some of the aftermarket extended range
antenna.
