[clue-tech] Linux newbie needs suggestions for hardware purchase and Linux installation

I want to learn Linux and am planning to buy a computer system in December
and want to install Linux. I am an electrical engineering/computer science
student who needs to learn Linux and some open source robotics software
called Player Stage / Gazebo.

 

I need to purchase a system with Nvidia graphics because that is what the
robotics software supports. Other users of this software have convinced me
to use Ubuntu.

 

I am thinking of purchasing a desktop system to install this at home and
adding a laptop so that I can also work at school. I know absolutely nothing
about Linux. I would like to purchase the equipment before your next
installfest, so that I may attend.

 

Does anyone have any suggestions of what type of hardware I will need and
any laptops that will work with Ubuntu? Any suggestions at all to get me
started will be much appreciated.
