I have an HP Pavilion dv9000 17" laptop which works greatly with the
last three versions of Ubuntu Linux, and pretty well with other Linuxes,
too. It's got a 256MB Nvidia graphics adapter, 2GB RAM, and a
dual-core. I have had almost zero hardware problems. The only thing
that hasn't worked for me, and I haven't really tried, is the integrated
web-cam. It is a ~little~ heavy... Backpack it, or limp.

One piece of advice on buying a laptop: Get everything. With the
exception of hard drive and RAM, you are basically stuck with it for a
while, so don't make compromises you'll regret later.
