Sounds like a situation I found myself in once doing it "as a friendly
gesture" that turned into a nightmare of "what they'd been sold and what
it actually did were two different things". 

In hindsight, I should have charged a LOT of money to look at that box.  

Anyone who doesn't plan appropriately to support their own Linux box
with an admin who knows what they're doing, shouldn't have hosted it
locally in the first place... 

Is what I learned from that... 

Don't do it for free.  In fact, don't go anywhere near the place without
a negotiated price per hour to fix it.  Just my personal advice... been
there, done that.
