That was merely the information I was given.  My mistake was in 
believing that I got that info from someone who knew what they were 
doing...  I've since found out that they (apparently) don't have anyone 
on-site who knows anything about this system - and since sendmail isn't 
something that I've had to regularly work with, my giving them the 
benefit of the doubt turned out to be erroneous.  I will likely be 
looking at the system tomorrow, with any luck I'll be able to gather 
information that's more coherent.

Thanks again for the responses.

(Oh, just as an aside, I'm aware of sendmail's fabled/dreaded cfg file, 
I'm hoping that I don't need to get into that...)
