I don't know whether IPP is the right protocol.  You might read about 
the hp-makeuri command and see what it gives you for the URI, if you can 
figure out how to tell it what printer you have.

For the driver you can generate a PPD file with foomatic-configure, 
again if you can tell it what kind of printer you have.  Then you can 
put the .ppd in /etc/cups/ppd and tell CUPS to use it rather than 
selecting a driver.  With hplip that might not be the best way though.

OpenPrinting says that for the HP6300 hplip is the right driver.  You 
can use the wizard at:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install_wizard/index.html

to see if your version supports your printer (they do list the 6500) and 
get a new version if necessary.

Be sure to watch when that version gets into your distro so you can 
switch over.
