I'm guessing you mean it just takes too long and this is an older system?  I
use rsync on much much bigger files just fine.

The problem with rsyncing an ever-growing mbox is that it always needs to be
copied since it will always be different.  rdiff-backup may not be an
improvement because it still has to do the diff of the whole file.  If it
were me, I'd try my luck with either splitting the mbox file into year
files, or just using cp -a
